A mix of popular SaaS applications, custom-built apps on the cloud, and legacy platforms hosted on-premises is simply a fact of life for most businesses. And
while these may meet business operational needs, they also result in a more complex hybrid IT environment.

Not all on-prem applications support modern authentication protocols - many use methods like LDAP, for example. On-prem apps are often located behind a firewall, which throws up additional challenges for remote access. And a range of different identity stores may be in use, adding to complexity. The same challenges may apply to custom-built cloud applications too, though typically, cloud apps tend to take a more standardized approach to protocols.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is also often difficult to implement - especially for small and mid-sized businesses - due to high cost and technical complexity.
